When your pet comes in for any dental procedure, we begin with a thorough evaluation of the teeth and oral cavity. We use an ultrasonic dental scaler to remove the plaque and tartar that has built up on the teeth and below the gum line. Once cleaned, the teeth are polished with a prophy paste which makes it more difficult for plaque to accumulate.
This procedure differs from non-professional dental scaling that may be offered by groomers. Hand-scaling the surface of the teeth alone may make them look better, but it leaves behind infection that causes pain and eventually leads to tooth loss. Anesthesia allows us to perform a full evaluation of your pet’s mouth, and to address the tartar that develops below the gums. With the benefit of this thorough assessment, we can determine if your pet has any compromised teeth which might require extraction or further intervention.
To help keep your pet’s mouth healthy longer, we offer a complimentary tooth brush and sample of tooth paste for you to use at home between cleanings. Please let us know if you need any guidance on how to brush your pet’s teeth!
