As pets age, they need continued attention and individualized care. Bringing your pet in for annual wellness exams and diagnostics can reassure you that your dog or cat is healthy, and allows us to determine if any specific health concerns are present. Early detection can improve the prognosis of many conditions, keep medical costs down, and help your pet live a longer, healthier life.
You may think of arthritis, cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and organ dysfunction as senior problems, but these conditions can occur in otherwise healthy adults. As a defense against predators, animals naturally hide signs of illness or weakness. This means subtle changes in their health or behavior may be easy to overlook. In some cases, your pet may not even show any symptoms. Regular exams and diagnostics can be critical in the diagnosis of these conditions.
During your pet’s wellness exam, we will perform a full physical assessment, checking your dog or cat from nose to tail. We will make sure your pet receives appropriate vaccinations and preventive care. A diagnostic workup may be performed to evaluate for parasites or other diseases, which could include blood, fecal, and urine tests. Your pet’s teeth will be evaluated to determine if further dental care is indicated. As your pet nears his or her senior years, we will recommend a baseline exam and diagnostic workup to know what is normal for your pet, in order to monitor for changes over time, and to detect onset of systemic diseases.
Because you spend the most time with your pet, you are your pet’s personal expert, as well as his or her greatest advocate. When you schedule your appointment, please let us know if you’ve noticed any physical or behavioral changes in your pet, as well as any other concerns you might have.
